An independent reading room

Every profile is written as a short editorial piece: an overview, the early years, the shape of a career, the work that mattered, and the recognition that followed. We link to the references we used so that readers can check anything for themselves.

We publish only details that are documented in reliable sources. Where a fact is not verifiable, we leave it out rather than guess — so some profiles carry fewer fields than others.

Portraits on this site are commissioned illustrations rather than press photographs, so that every profile can be published with clear rights.
