Early life
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1981, Williams grew up in California and was coached from an early age alongside her elder sister Venus.
Career journey
She turned professional in 1995 and won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. Over the following two decades she held the world number one ranking across multiple spells and completed a career Grand Slam. She played her final professional match at the 2022 US Open.

23 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 women's doubles majors partnering Venus Williams, and four Olympic gold medals.
